IPE Community-Based Fellowship Opportunities

What Is an IPE Community-Based Fellowship?

IPE Community-Based Fellowships are structured, experiential learning opportunities hosted at community and clinical organizations partnering with Iona University. These fellowships allow you to put classroom learning into action while developing essential skills for collaborative practice.

Students completing their IPE learning modules bring both discipline-specific expertise and a shared foundation in the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) Core Competencies. These competencies have been established by the Interprofessional Education Collaborative:

  • Values & Ethics
  • Roles & Responsibilities
  • Interprofessional Communication
  • Teams & Team-Based Care

Students will work as part of an interdisciplinary team, guided by a trained faculty facilitator or community-based facilitator, to explore what effective collaboration looks like in practice.

Why Participate in an IPE Fellowship?

Employers across healthcare, education, and community settings consistently seek graduates who can collaborate effectively across professions. IPE Community-Based Fellowships help you build those skills during your training to become a professional.

By participating, you will:

  • Gain real-world experience working on interdisciplinary teams
  • Apply IPE concepts and coursework in authentic settings
  • Strengthen communication, teamwork, and leadership skills
  • Learn how different professions contribute to shared outcomes
  • Enhance your resume with experiential, collaborative learning

Students who complete an IPE fellowship graduate with a deeper understanding of interprofessional practice—and a competitive edge for future careers.

How Are Fellowships Structured?

  • Length: 4–10 weeks during the academic semester
  • Time Commitment: Approximately 2–3 hours per week
  • Format: In-person, virtual, or hybrid (depending on the fellowship site)

Interdisciplinary teams work under the guidance of a trained faculty member or community-based site facilitator. Facilitators coordinate meeting times, project expectations, assignments, and deadlines.

Important: Each fellowship has unique requirements. Students should carefully review fellowship descriptions to confirm eligibility, scheduling availability, and modality (in-person or virtual).

Who Is Involved?

Each fellowship includes:

  • Students from Iona University IPE participating programs
  • A trained IPE faculty facilitator or community-based site facilitator

Iona University has more than 30 faculty members trained and certified through the Texas IPE Consortium to facilitate interprofessional learning. Facilitators actively guide teams to collaborate, problem-solve, and engage—not observe—throughout the fellowship experience.

Eligibility & Participation Guidelines

  • Students must complete introductory IPE learning modules (typically in the first year of their program) before applying
  • To ensure access for all students, participation is limited to two fellowship experiences per student
  • Students may not participate in the same fellowship for a second semester unless explicitly stated
  • All students are expected to uphold the IPEC Core Competencies and demonstrate professional conduct throughout the experience

Over the course of the fellowship, my understanding of the four core competencies, has deepened significantly. I’ve learned how shared values and respect for each profession build trust within the team. I now better understand the distinct roles and expertise each discipline brings to patient care. My communication skills have improved, especially in coordinating care and resolving conflicts collaboratively. Overall, I’ve come to see teamwork not just as working together, but as intentionally integrating our strengths to achieve the best outcomes for patients.
