New York State Annual Fire Inspection
New York State Annual Fire Inspection Beginning On Monday, March 11
Each year, Iona University is required to undergo a mandatory Annual Fire Safety Inspection. This inspection is performed by members of the New York State Fire Marshal’s office in conjunction with the Iona University Facilities department. The purpose of the inspection is to make sure that Iona University is in compliance with New York State Fire Safety Regulations, but more importantly to ensure the safety of all who work and attend Iona University. This year’s inspection will commence on Monday, March 11, 2024, and continue until completed. This inspection includes all buildings and will start with student living areas.
While we attempt to make these inspections as unobtrusive as possible, it does require that the inspectors have access to all areas of the University property.
- No access or egress door(s) shall be blocked in any way; not even temporarily. Egress doors cannot be chained to prevent them from opening.
- Equipment, items or furniture cannot be stored or temporarily stored in hallways or stairwells.
- The use of a multi-tap device is strictly forbidden. This pertains to the outlet multiplier that turns two outlets into three or more. Extension cords are not to be used as a replacement for permanent wiring. A surge protector can be used in place of a cord. However, a surge protector plugged into another surge protector (piggy-backing) is not allowed. The surge protector being used must plug directly into an outlet.
- No signage is allowed on any egress door, other than that which identifies it as an emergency exit, or an alarmed emergency exit.
- No doors leading to or from a stairwell are to be propped open at any time.
- No doors leading to or part of a fire egress corridor can be propped open at any time. There is an exception when someone occupies an office that opens to a hallway. If someone is in the room, the door can remain opened. However, once the room is unoccupied, the door must be closed. All doors which lead to an egress corridor or stairwell must close automatically from the open position.
- No candles, incense, fire or smoke producing item are to be used inside a building.
- No smoking in any building on campus.
- All fire support systems are to be kept clear. This includes but is not limited to fire extinguishers, fire hydrants, fire panels and piping that distinguishes itself as a fire system. All electrical panels must also be kept clear at all times.
- All ceiling tiles should be in place. If you see a ceiling missing a tile, please report it right away.
- All areas should be kept clean from clutter.
- All chemicals must be stored in a safe environment according to proper codes and procedures.
- Do not use any electrical appliances for anything other than the intended use.
- All combustible materials - including piles of books and papers - must be stored no higher than 18 inches below a sprinkler head. This pertains to anything that can burn being stored on top of cabinets or lockers etc. No posters or wall hangings should be up to the ceiling in a room that has a sprinkler system. Also, nothing should ever be attached to a sprinkler head.
- Please submit a work order if you see any emergency lighting or exit lighting that is out.
