Pursue history. Understand the world. Move the world.

There’s simply no better vantage point from which to view our contemporary world than history, the discipline most concerned with understanding change. As a history major, you’ll gain the broad perspective and ethical framework you need to become your own agent of positive change, both personally and professionally.

Start here, move everywhere

As a history major, you can go on to almost any career you choose. Our undergraduate program offers a course of study designed to prepare a well-rounded individual with the critical thinking, verbal and writing skills valued by employers everywhere.

At the graduate level, we offer an MA in History which is designed to benefit those seeking professional advancement and/or personal fulfillment. Designed for those with the desire, but limited time and funds, to study history, our MA program’s uncomplicated course requirements allow for completion within 1 to 1.5 years. Undergraduate students may also choose to earn their BA and MA in History in five years.

Our students carry the lessons of history and the tools of analysis and argument into fields such as:

  • Teaching
  • Law and law enforcement
  • Communications and journalism
  • Information management
  • Business and nonprofit work
  • Politics and government service
  • Advocacy and policymaking
  • Research and scholarship

You’ll benefit from outstanding resources both on and off campus. Iona is home to the Thomas Paine National Historical Association Collection, comprising the rare original works and writings of one of America’s founding Fathers. Our location, 20 miles north of Midtown Manhattan, also gives you easy access to many historical treasures held in institutions such as:

  • Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • New York Historical Society
  • Ellis Island Immigration Museum
  • Museum of Jewish History
  • New York Public Library
  • United Nations

We all have personal histories, touched and shaped by people, ideas and events close to home and across the globe. By studying history at Iona, you will master the ability to question confidently, research diligently, examine thoroughly, deliberate deeply and communicate clearly. You will be well prepared to make history––and move the world.
