"De-Escalation Through Communication"

Presented by Meredith Mounty.

Course Description

Working with students who have significant emotional needs can be both meaningful and complex. This hands-on course empowers professionals with trauma-informed, communication-based strategies to navigate emotional escalation, build strong connections, and improve therapeutic outcomes. Participants will explore how behavior is often rooted in unmet communication needs and learn to identify the “why” behind these responses. Grounded in real-world experience, this course emphasizes the role of communication in building trust, fostering collaboration, and creating lasting change for students who are often the hardest to reach.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Recognize common behavioral patterns that may signal unmet communication needs.
  2. Apply trauma-informed strategies to manage emotional escalation and support student regulation.
  3. Build trust and therapeutic connections with students who present with emotional and behavioral challenges.
  4. Adapt therapy plans to support language development and emotional growth in students.
  5. Collaborate with school teams to create consistent, supportive approaches for emotionally complex students.
