Why earn a minor in journalism at Iona?

Explore your passions and follow your curiosity with a minor in journalism. Learn how to relay the facts in engaging ways across a variety of platforms while building your portfolio.

Gain Hands-On Experience

Students pursuing this minor do real reporting and produce real news stories - for print, video and audio - and have the opportunity to publish their work in all of the Iona student-run media outlets. Students also have access to the department's professional equipment to produce content and gain hands-on experience.

Principles of Journalism

While the ways in which news is shared have changed over the years, many of the principles remain constant. Students gain a solid grounding in the fundamentals of journalism, including how to craft an informative interview and how to plan a newscast.

A Global Media Landscape

Iona is located just 20 miles north of New York City, widely known as a media landscape with global reach. Students can take advantage of being in proximity to the four major U.S. broadcast networks (NBC, ABC, CBS and Fox) as well as eminent newspaper publications such as The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Develop Editing Skills

Techniques on writing and editing for various forms of media help students develop an instinct for what is critical to a story while capturing an audience’s attention. Students also learn to work within style guidelines and how to write effective headlines and cutlines.
