Discover new ways to move the world of science and medicine.

If the world of science beckons you, you’ll find opportunities here to help you discover the way forward. Our students go on to professional careers in medicine and healthcare, laboratory and field research, environmental advocacy and policy, and a wide variety of other fields, from law to education.  Rigorous academic programs will prepare you for the most competitive graduate-level and professional programs.  Research and service-learning experiences will help you to develop your skills as a scientist while you discover the many different ways one person can move the world.

Extensive program choices

Because we offer many different programs within the Biology Department, you’ll have the flexibility to choose what best suits your interests. Put yourself on a path towards medical or dental school; explore interdisciplinary programs in the sciences; choose pre-professional programs like physical therapy; or opt for the environmental studies major and put your skills to work on complex local, national and global issues.  You may also take advantage of our Careers in Science at Iona (CSI) program––your chance to meet accomplished professionals in many areas of science and talk face-to-face about what really moves you.

Research and service learning experiences

Most of our faculty members are active scientists who regularly involve undergraduates in their research projects. Iona students present their research at undergraduate regional and national conferences, earning awards every time they participate. Our students also co-author articles that are published in peer-reviewed journals. Thanks to our affiliation with St. Vincent’s Hospital in Bridgeport and our extensive alumni network, you’ll have hands-on fieldwork opportunities and internships that will broaden your skills and career connections. Pre-physical therapy students may qualify for an in-house internship in the Athletics Department, and many students volunteer at area hospitals and therapy clinics, gaining valuable service-learning experience.

As a Biology student at Iona, you may also choose to live on a science floor in our residence halls, join the Biology Club or the Environmental Club and be part of an active, engaged science community that is discovering new ways to move the world!

Connections that move careers forward

Iona College enjoys articulation agreements with Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, offering programs for future physicians, dentists and pharmacists. We also have an articulation agreement with New York Chiropractic College and New York College of Podiatric Medicine.

We are a member chapter of the National Biological Honor Society, Beta Beta Beta.

Scholarship Support for Medical School

The George and Margaret Pappas Medical School scholarship is available for one full-time senior who has been accepted to a school of medicine or to a program in a related health science. Jared Gargano '19, the most recent recipient, was an active Biology major who earned multiple accolades for his outstanding work in the laboratory and the classroom and was accepted to medical school during his freshman year through the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine Early Acceptance Program.

Student Success

The faculty and staff here are always an email or a visit away and I think that's what separates Iona from all other schools is the willingness and availability that the professors have to help their students.
