Test Optional FAQs

High school students applying for admission to Iona College for the fall of 2020 or later are not required to submit standardized test scores within their applications for admission to the College.*

To learn more about Iona’s test-optional policy, please take the time to review the frequently asked questions listed below, and feel free to contact us with any additional questions.

  • What does Test Optional mean?

Test optional admissions means that an application is considered complete and can be reviewed and provided an admissions decision based on the student’s high school (GPA) scores and recommendation letters. ACT/SAT scores are no longer required in order to apply for admission to Iona College.
  • Why did Iona College choose to adopt a test-optional admissions policy?

At Iona, students are more than just a number, and we are committed to every individual student’s success. As the most current research indicates that standardized test scores are not always valid predictors when it comes to classroom success for first-year college students, we chose to move forward with a test-optional admissions policy. This leaves our admissions office with more time to review each student’s application holistically, considering high school transcript, recommendation letters from teachers and counselors, and a student’s overall record of achievement.
  • Will I still be considered for Iona College's Merit Awards if I choose to not include my test scores?

Yes! Every applicant to Iona College is automatically considered for our Merit Awards when they submit a complete application. An application is considered complete regardless of whether standardized test scores have been submitted.
  • If I do choose to submit SAT/ACT scores, will my application be stronger?

Not necessarily. We recommend submitting standardized test scores only if you believe they are indicative of your academic achievements and potential and will support your candidacy for admission.

Remember - we evaluate your application holistically and will be considering a number of factors to determine whether Iona College is the best fit for your success in higher education.
  • *Are any applicants still required to submit standardized test scores?

Yes. Per NCAA regulations, all prospective student athletes are required to submit SAT or ACT scores through the NCAA Eligibility Center. Test scores are not required for admission to Iona College.
