Why Study Teaching at Iona?

Our program is specifically designed for career changers who have a bachelor's degree but lack formal training in teacher education.

You will experience a fieldwork-driven program so you are working in school communities early and often. Our rigorous student-teaching program enables you to feel confident approaching your first classroom teaching position.

You will learn from dedicated faculty who have first-hand experience as teachers, principals, and school superintendents. They will become your mentors, career advisers and advocates helping you achieve success in your own classroom.

Our program boasts a highly successful EDTPA (NYS videotaped teacher portfolio exam) pass rate.

Our courses meet in the evening, so you can manage your job and family life while earning your degree.

Concentrations are available for you to customize your degree to a specific age group or subject area:

  • Adolescence Education (Grades 7-12): Biology, English, Mathematics, Social Studies or Spanish
  • Childhood Education (Grades 1-6)
  • Childhood (Grades 1-6) and Special Education
  • Childhood and Early Childhood Education (Birth - Grade 6)

What You'll Learn

You will gain an understanding of how students learn, and you will develop the skills and experience to teach children and young adults in diverse settings and subject areas.

You will learn the practical skills of developing and presenting effective lesson plans in your area, so that your students are prepared to succeed.

Application Requirements

Official GRE scores sent to ETS code 2324. A transcript evaluation will be done to determine if any outstanding prerequisites need to be completed.
