Change a life. Move the world.

The Criminal Justice Department will prepare you for the challenges of our multifaceted criminal justice system, helping you develop the knowledge, skills and strength of character required to change lives––and move the world.
Our rigorous, high-caliber courses are taught by outstanding faculty members who are actively engaged in criminal justice research. They will become your biggest advocates, helping you to make invaluable connections in the field. In addition to advancing criminal justice scholarship, your teachers will provide one-on-one advising and mentoring; they’ll help with your professional development; and they’ll expose you to current research and evidence-based practices. They’ll even help with applications to graduate or law schools!

Topics of our times

Our curriculum covers the full range of our criminal justice system. You’ll explore the root causes of crime, law enforcement policies, correctional institutions and the court system, and focus on timely issues like corporate and white-collar crime, profiling violent crime and victimology. Our new Security Threat Assessment Minor builds on the growing interest in the areas of terrorism and intelligence gathering. Students learn first hand from faculty who are current practitioners and published scholars in the field.

Principles in practice

Your classes will incorporate and review core social justice principles as you explore the criminal justice system from an interdisciplinary perspective. And you will have many opportunities to put those principles into practice. Students have internship opportunities at over 100 agencies in the tri-state area, including the US Secret Service, US Marshals Service, FBI, Department of Homeland Security, state and local policy agencies, Victim Services, county jails and mental health units. Our students are active and engaged in the field, participating in community service and the Criminal Justice Club, the American Criminal Justice Association, and the National Criminal Justice Honor Society.

Careers that change lives

We are proud of our excellent track record in helping students successfully move their careers forward, whether the next step is graduate school or the workplace. Our students have been handpicked to work in federal agencies; they have served as police commissioners and high-ranking federal agents; and over 450 NYPD officers are Iona alumni. Our students have gone on to service justice in many different ways, including:
  • Law school and graduate
    programs in mental health
  • Correctional Leadership
  • Law Enforcement for state, local and NYPD
  • US Secret Service
  • US Marshals Service
  • FBI
  • Financial Crimes Task Force

“We are again fortunate to have two of your students joining us this semester as part of our intern program. I can honestly say that every Iona student that has worked as an intern with the U.S. Marshals in the Southern District of N.Y., has been exceptional – very hardworking and reliable.”

Student Success

After I completed my bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice at Iona College, the Criminal Justice master’s program allowed me to delve into an area of law in which I was most interested. The coursework, which included reading case law and statutes, research, and writing, prepared me for law school and ultimately for a career as an attorney by allowing me to hone the skills that I now use every day. The professors, who have a variety of experience in the criminal justice field, were instrumental in helping me identify my career goals and guiding me to achieve them.
