Teach a student. Inspire a classroom. Move the world.

Teachers change lives, one child, one classroom, one school at a time. If you have always dreamed of teaching, the Iona Education Department is the place to start. We believe that becoming a teacher and professional educator is a lifelong journey of learning and caring––and we invite you to begin that journey with us.
Our curriculum and faculty will prepare you for success in today’s classrooms. Our New York State Approved Teacher Preparation Programs will prepare you to apply for initial or additional state certification upon degree completion. Our highly qualified faculty collectively holds experience as teachers, principals, and school superintendents, and will become your mentors, field placement supervisors, career advisors and advocates as they help you move from our campus to a classroom of your own.
We strive to prepare a new generation of knowledgeable teachers who consider the whole child in instructional planning and teaching. Our teacher candidates are:
  • Committed to the service of others as the fundamental condition of educational practice and to social justice as its guiding principle
  • Directed by the needs of diverse communities of learners and the belief that every child can learn
  • Motivated to excel as lifelong learners, critical thinkers and problem solvers as well as leaders in their classrooms and communities

From campus to classroom in just two semesters

Students eager to get in front of students in the classroom you won’t be disappointed! We focus on integrating theory and practice by providing field placement opportunities within the first two years. Beginning sophomore year, students will spend time observing and participating in classrooms of local schools, completing two intensive fieldwork experiences prior to student teaching.

These opportunities for students to perfect their teaching skills before completing their degree contribute significantly to Iona’s impressive job placement rate, which is among the highest of all schools in the area.

The world needs you

Multiple sources forecast hundreds of thousands of new teacher openings by 2020, making this the ideal time to pursue your degree. Iona graduates are in high demand and are regularly offered teaching positions in the NYC metropolitan area and beyond.
With small classroom sizes, supportive and experienced professors, and an outstanding reputation for excellence in teacher preparation, Iona’s Education Department offers you a rewarding and timely path to teaching––a profession that can move the world.
