Landon Popovic ’27 Finds His Voice at Iona, Earns National Recognition in Sports Broadcasting
From hosting his own show on WIUR to taking the next steps in his career through his internships with YES and FOX, Landon Popovic ’27 found his voice at Iona.
At the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) Awards, Popovic won the award for Best Sports Talk Show, an achievement he credits to the support of the Iona community.
Landon Popovic ’27 didn’t take a straight path to success at Iona University—but that unconventional start helped shape one of the University’s rising voices in sports media.
A Media & Strategic Communications major with a concentration in Digital Production, Popovic discovered his calling through the doors opened and connections forged upon his arrival on campus.
“I’ve been lucky to have so many opportunities here,” Popovic said. “I feel like I was born to do this. I have learned so much from all the wonderful Iona faculty about what makes you successful in this industry.”
That found sense of purpose began at WIUR, Iona’s student-run radio station. What started as an entry point quickly evolved into a leadership role; today, Popovic serves as director of sports broadcasting and hosts his own radio show.
Through WIUR, the Pelham, N.Y. native has not only developed his on-air presence but also helped create opportunities for other students to gain hands-on experience.
“I think what makes Iona so special is that it’s really up to the student how far you go,” Popovic said. “I want to give students, regardless of class level, the chance to be on air.”
His work has earned national recognition. After being named a finalist for Best Sports Talk Show at the Intercollegiate Broadcasting System (IBS) Awards in 2025, Popovic won the award in 2026, an achievement he credits to the support of the Iona community.
“None of that is possible without WIUR giving me a chance to be on air as a freshman,” Popovic said.
Beyond radio, Popovic has expanded his experience across Iona’s student media landscape, contributing to Iona University Television (IUTV) and The Ionian, the student-run newspaper. Those opportunities, combined with classroom learning, helped him secure high-level industry experience, including internships with FOX Sports and YES Network.
At YES Network, Popovic worked as a research and production intern, contributing to broadcasts for the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Nets. His responsibilities included compiling statistical research, preparing matchup reports, writing shot sheets for on-air talent, and clipping highlights for social media.
“I’ve learned to collaborate on professional-level productions and think critically both in and out of the classroom,” Popovic said.
Looking ahead, Popovic is keeping his options open — but remains focused on building a career in sports media, whether on air or behind the scenes. He is already on track to continue with YES Network as a freelancer, a testament to the experience he has gained.
“I used to think there was only one way to succeed,” Popovic said. “But through Iona, I’ve learned there is no one path, and I know I have the tools to succeed.”
With national recognition, industry experience, and a commitment to lifting others as he grows, Popovic is turning opportunity into momentum, one broadcast at a time.
"I’ve been lucky to have so many opportunities here...I think what makes Iona so special is that it’s really up to the student how far you go."
